The Western Maine Association Recreation Departments of Bridgton, Fryeburg, Brownfield, Denmark, and Lovell are once again forming this year’s Team Western Maine to qualify and possibly compete in the Hershey Youth Track & Field Games in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This national program involves millions of youngsters from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the 10 provinces and 3 territories of Canada, and this year will celebrate 31 years in promoting participation, enjoyment and physical exercise to boys and girls ages 9 to 14 years old. This program came to our area in 2006 and every year over 30 children try to gain a spot on the Maine team that travels to nationals in early August.
Sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association, USA Track & Field, Athletics Canada and by the Hershey Company, the Hershey Youth Program is free for participants and the only equipment required is simply a pair of running shoes and the desire to learn basic track & field skills and have fun. The events include: 50/100/200/400 meter dashes for the younger ages up to 800/1600 meet dashes for older children; and a 4 x 100 meter relay, standing broad jump and softball throw. Carla Tripp from Lovell proudly represented Team Western Maine at nationals who qualified in the girls 11-12 softball throw and placed 7th overall.
